Google is in advanced discussions with AI research company Anthropic on a cloud computing deal potentially worth $30 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The agreement WOULD provide Anthropic with expanded access to Google's custom tensor processing units (TPUs), specialized chips optimized for machine learning workloads.

The proposed partnership marks a strategic escalation in the AI infrastructure race among tech giants. Anthropic, which already uses Google Cloud for its Claude AI models, would gain critical computing resources amid industry-wide shortages of advanced chips and data center capacity. "We're partnering with Google Cloud to support the next phase of Anthropic," said CEO Dario Amodei, indicating plans for broader deployment of AI systems.

Unlike traditional investment deals, this arrangement focuses primarily on computational resources rather than capital infusion. The MOVE comes as cloud providers increasingly compete to anchor next-generation AI development on their platforms, with Anthropic emerging as a key battleground following its $4 billion valuation in 2023.
